for the annual Aussie Tour v Wythenshawe CC game

Always the highlight of our cricket calendar and after tonight’s fantastic battle royale…the eagerly anticipated visiting Shaun Brown Australian Cricket Academy’s annual UK tour match here at Longley Lane, certainly lived up to its reputation and some!
SBCC ‘Stars’ squad batting first after Wythenshawe ‘Hawks’ won the toss & elected to field.
Stars getting into an early rhythm, ticking over the score reaching 32 runs before losing their first wicket, all players adding valuable contributions, reaching 115 runs in their allotted 25 overs, wickets coming from Liam McCoy (2) Zach Bolton, Bobby Braisdell, Morgan Platt, Sonny Ash & James Gutteridge all with 1 wicket each. Stars batter L. Blizzard the highest scorer in the 1st innings with 20 not out.
Wythenshawe Hawks requiring 116 to win, began their reply with confidence, Alfie Walker (24) & Heetain Arora (40) playing some lovely, strong shots to push Hawks on, Stars bowlers were spurred on by Hawks swagger, W. Tomlin & N. Suresh picking up 2 wickets each, Stars fielders working hard to close gaps, Hawks having to work hard to keep the run rate on track.
The weather giving both teams a lot of headaches tonight, with intermittent downpours and a bitterly cold wind making life out in the field and in the middle, a daunting task.
Both sets of players were keen to see the match through to a natural conclusion, carrying on when they could through spates of heavy drizzle, Hawks pushing the score right to the wire and into the very last over, Heetain & Rian Mandal the last bats standing, needed to hit 11 runs off the last over but finally just fell short by 8 runs, as we finished on 107/9.
Valiant batting, excellent bowling and outstanding fielding performances from all who played for both teams, a true match of ability, ages & dedication & what a finish!!!
After the match SBCC & WCC caps were presented to the player judged to have given a stand out performance, N. Suresh from Stars & Heetain Arora from Hawks.
Huge thanks to our club umpire Fred for once again officiating the match, to Jane for scoring (the old fashioned way in a book!!) to our catering & bar staff for keeping everyone fed & watered, to all parents and families who stayed after training to cheer on both teams.
Finally, thank you to Shaun Brown’s Academy for entrusting us once again to host & play in this much loved annual match, one where the miles between us disappear, replaced with friendship, mutual respect and a real passion for cricket.
Well done everyone, looking forward to next year already!!
We wish SBCC’s tour squad a successful continuation of their UK tour.
Quote from our scorer Jane (re the glorious double rainbows on display tonight)
“If you don’t have rain, you don’t have rainbows”
